Accommodation

Six rooms, and no two of them alike

Three in the main house, three standing on their own in the trees. All of them face something worth waking up to.

How to choose

Choose by what you want to hear at four in the morning.

Water, if you take the Boathouse. Nothing at all in Stonepine, which is far enough from the house that the only sound is the wood in the stove. Wind across the roof in the Summit Vault. We will talk it through with you before you book — it matters more than the square metres.

Larch Loft

Set into the roof line, level with the tops of the larches.

The smallest of the rooms and the one guests ask for by name. A single dormer runs the length of the east wall, so the first hour of daylight arrives through branches rather than over them. Floors are oiled larch cut from the valley's own thinning programme.

Cirrus Suite

A terrace that sits, most mornings, just above the cloud.

The valley holds an inversion layer for much of autumn. This room was positioned to sit above it. On those mornings the terrace looks out across a white floor with only the far ridge showing through, and the sound carries strangely far.

The Boathouse

On the lake itself, reached by a timber walkway.

Built on the original 1911 footings and rebuilt in the same larch. The bed faces west through a full-width opening; below the floor, water. A rowing boat is moored at the steps and is yours for the length of your stay.

Stonepine Cabin

Eleven minutes' walk from the main house. Deliberately.

Freestanding, off the main path, and the only room with no view of another building. Interior walls are solid stone pine — the timber alpine builders have used for bedrooms for four hundred years, on the belief that it slows the heart. We make no claims. Guests sleep.

Summit Vault

The top floor, taken whole. Glass on three sides.

The house's original water reservoir, emptied and rebuilt as a single room under a vaulted timber roof. Three aspects, a hearth in the centre, and a hatch onto the roof terrace for the nights the sky is worth the cold.

Fernhollow Studio

At ground level, opening straight onto the moss garden.

Half-sunk into the slope so the bed sits at the height of the ferns. A quiet room, cool in summer, with a door that opens directly onto the moss garden and the path down to the bathhouse.
